Artist Statement

I am a visual artist and writer who tells an array of personal experiences and experiences that can be seen all around us. My goal in all of my artwork is to capture the whimsical beauty of the world, while leaving space for symbols of pain and struggle.

My work exists in that in-between space: dreamy but rooted in real life.

I create from a personal place. A lot of what I make comes from my own experiences, such as learning to trust my voice, loss and grief, trauma, navigating my identity as an artist, memories, and rebirth.

My art began as a life jacket, rescuing me out of a hard financial situation. I was stolen from and all of what I worked hard for was gone. I remember how bad my mind raced through those first days, and I found that the only thing that would silence the sound would be tapping into my imagination.

A world where prices didn’t matter, it was completely free for me to dream.

Now with a few years under my belt as an artist, I plan to extend my voice towards activism. I’m engaging with community groups near me in order to exercise my artistic voice for real change. As a black woman artist, I feel like it is a part of my job to offer my talents as a way to incite people to change.

There is beauty in the pain and struggle of life. I believe that through these painful experiences are the times where we can pull ourselves together to create something beyond our own experiences, in order to change the world around us.
